Golf Tips - How to Make the Most Out of Par 3's and 5's

There are many golf tips out there but how can you know which to take to heart that can improve your game? Those that cover specific aspects of the game that you face each time you play will really be helpful in choosing the right techniques to help you play better golf.

When hitting onto a par 3 you can almost guarantee that if you miss the green your chances of making a birdie are almost impossible. For some players and on some par 3's if you miss the green you will be lucky if you make a bogey. In order to put more balls on the green for par 3's you want to do two things. First you need to pick the right club for the shot. You'll want to consider where the flag is placed, if the green is hard or soft and slope of the green. Judging the slope from the tee-box can be hard but by looking at the surrounding terrain you can get a general idea of where the green slopes.

The second thing you need to do is determine where the green is in relation to the tee-box. If the green is below the tee-box you'll want to take less club. If it's 145 yards to the center and you can hit your 9 iron that far you'll want to go with a wedge instead. The ball will roll farther and have more time in the air since the green is below you. The opposite is true for greens above the tee-box.

When it comes to par 5's it's all about planning. When you approach par 5's you should be able to mentally play the hole before you tee off. Think what shots you'll hit in what order depending on the distance of the hole. An example would be to think to yourself you're going to hit your driver, then your six iron, then a chip and a one putt. This way you're already thinking about birdie before you get on the tee-box. You should do this with all holes but it's especially important on par 5's because the holes are so long you need to have a game plan or you might rush your shots.

Following these simple tips will increase your chances of scoring better each time you go to the golf course. Rhythm and routine are key elements of golf and by developing good habits you can develop a good golf game. Play your game and don't focus on what others are doing. This will help you to not only enjoy the game of golf more but to be more confident in each shot you take.
